Protease Inhibitors and Diabetes

The federal Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued an important notice to all persons taking or considering taking Protease Inhibitors. The use of protease inhibitors may cause or exacerbate diabetes or hyperglycemia (elevated blood sugar levels). The exact reason for this adverse reaction is not yet known. As of May 12th 1997, eighty-three cases have been reported to the FDA.

Diabetes and hyperglycemia are serious conditions, if left untreated can lead to coma and death.

If you are currently taking any of the four approved protease inhibitors please be aware of the signs of diabetes or hyperglycemia. They are: fruity smelling breath, excessive thirst, excessive hunger, increased urination (peeing), fatigue, sudden weight-loss, and/or dry-itchy skin. If you are experiencing any of these symptoms see your doctor immediately!!!

If you are taking protease inhibitors and not presently experiencing these symptoms, please discuss this matter with your doctor, and have your blood sugar level checked.
