    Features
    The Campaign Trail
The Rev. Jesse Jackson is on a campaign again—but this time it is not to be U.S. president. Jackson's Rainbow/PUSH Coalition is working to address the denial of the rampant spread of HIV among African-Americans by trying to debunk the "stigma" and "taboo" perceptions many hold about it. It will be a hard fight, but, as Jackson reveals to our interviewer, he's ready.

    Fighting the Good Fight
Joining Jesse Jackson in the battle against the spread of HIV infections among African-Americans is a group of experts who sat with him on a nationally televised forum, AIDS: Ending the Silence, Ending the Epidemic. Activist Rae Lewis-Thornton is on the front lines with the hard-hitting truth about prevention. Helene Gayle says the huge disproportion of African-Americans infected with HIV in relation to their population numbers shows a denial of HIV's threat. Lisa Henry-Reid warns about the exploding number of infections in adolescents. Debra Fraser-Howze says it's time to move "from ACT UP to Black UP". Cassandra Newkirk says that AIDS rates six times higher in prisons than in the general public reveal a system failure.

    People Just Like Us
All over the country, large-scale, one-stop-and-shop, and one-size-fits-all AIDS service organizations are not the only places to go any longer. Many groups of people have found a need to set up shop for those among them infected with HIV—whether it's the same ethnic group, same racial group, or same sex. It's a method that's working for a lot of people, but it's not without its drawbacks.

    Drug Wars
Some members of Congress say they are fed up with the high cost of prescription drugs in this country, especially when the exact same drugs—made in the United States and exported to other nations—are being sold for lower prices. So legislation is now pending in the U.S. Senate that would allow for reimportation of those drugs at the cheaper rates. Drug manufacturers, though, aren't too happy about this. So don't go spending your planned extra "savings" just yet.
